We are still accepting students for our Art Sampler class at Georgetown (all grades), on Mondays from 2-3pm and Advanced Writing at Georgetown (HS)on Mondays from 1-3pm. We are also accepting students for a MS/HS Painting class at the Fellowship location on Thursdays from 12:30-1:30pm. Basic Writing Course Description

This course is designed to help students learn the skills needed for basic academic writing. These skills include parts of speech, how to write sentences, basic grammar and punctuation, mechanics, spelling, and vocabulary. In addition, students will also learn how to write a basic paragraph. Each class will consist of a brief lecture, with question and answer time, an assigned task, review of the task, and homework assignment for the next lesson. Handouts will be provided.

Intermediate Writing Course Description

This course is designed to help students learn the skills needed for intermediate academic writing. These skills include how to write sentences using proper grammar and punctuation. In addition, students will also learn how to write a basic five paragraph essay. Each class will consist of a brief lecture, with question and answer time, an assigned task, review of the task, and homework assignment for the next lesson. Handouts will be provided.

Advanced Writing Course Description

This course is designed to help students learn the skills needed for advanced academic writing. These skills include how to write a thesis statement, using critical thinking for evaluation and analysis, the writing process, modes and genres of writing, and basic research. Each class will consist of a brief lecture, with question and answer time, an assigned task, review of the task, and homework assignment for the next lesson. Handouts will be provided.

Beginning Elementary French

Children will be introduced to the basic elements of the French language. Speaking and comprehension skills will be developed through a variety of activities. Some topics to be covered will include simple greetings, family, clothing, weather, days of the week, numbers, alphabet.

Beginning Middle/High School French

Speaking and listening skills will be stressed as well as reading and writing skills to a lesser degree. Students will follow the adventures of a French student and her American friend who set out to teach one another their respective languages. Conversations between these two students are the vehicle for developing speaking and listening skills. The conversations will be reenacted ; oral questions will be asked and answered in French; some reading and writing of French will be involved to a lesser degree. Topics will include everyday activities such as grocery shopping, family dinners, and school situations.

Beginning Elementary Spanish

This is a first term introductory Spanish class where students will learn the Spanish Alphabet basic grammar, and sentence structure. There will be outside homework and tests for the Jr./Sr. High level students.

Beginning Middle/High School Spanish

This is a continuing Spanish class where students will continue to learn Spanish that was started in the previous semester. There will be outside work required for Jr./Sr. High students as well as tests. It is highly recommended that students should have successfully completed the Introductory term prior to registering for this class. However, if your student has had previous Spanish instruction and you would like to register, please contact Care 2 Learn for an evaluation for placement.

Term 3 - Elementary Spanish

Students will continue to build up their Spanish speaking skills started in the previous semesters. The students will begin to learn how to speak in other tenses outside of the present. They will work on writing narratives, listening to stories and being able to discuss things that have happened. Students will continue working on writing, speaking, and understanding Spanish. It is highly recommended that students should have successfully completed the Introductory term prior to registering for this class. However, if your student has had previous Spanish instruction and you would like to register, please contact Care 2 Learn for an evaluation for placement.

Term 3 - Middle/High School Spanish

Fine Arts - Painting - Elementary

This class will focus on Watercolors for the first 7 weeks and Acrylics for the remaining 7 weeks. Students will the learn the basic techniques of each medium. They will make 5-6 painting projects with the final one being on a stretched canvas that the students tighten themselves. Each project will involve preliminary drawings. Projects will include painting from real life, photos, and the student’s imagination. Students will be asked to practice drawing skills, in their sketchbooks, every week as homework. Fundamental skills will be taught and encouraged (composition, balance, scale, proportion). Also, fundamental art techniques will be taught (portraiture, still life, shading, perspective). The extent to which these skills and techniques are taught will depend on each student's readiness to receive more detailed instructions. No previous art experience is needed for this class.

Fine Arts - Sampler - Elementary

This is a sample art class that explores different mediums ranging from Drawing to painting. A variety of mediums will be explored (Paint, paste, pencil, and chalk). Fundamental drawing skills will be taught (composition, balance, scale, proportion). Fundamental art techniques will be taught (portraiture, perspective, still life, shading). Students will be taught to expand their art vocabulary. Color theory and techniques will be taught (students will learn and create the color wheel). Students will have an opportunity to expand their imagination and creativity. Suggested ages are 6-12 (for the beginning art student or for experience art students who are interested in expanding upon the lesson of the week). No previous art class required.

Fine Arts - Painting - Middle/High School

Fine Arts - Sampler - Middle/High School

This class explores different mediums for drawing and painting. A variety of mediums will be explored. Fundamental drawing skills will be built upon and the students’ skills enhanced. Fundamental art techniques will be built upon. Students will be taught to expand their art vocabulary.

Music Appreciation

This music appreciation course will focus upon the fundamentals of music and examine the history of music from the middle ages until the present, including many musical styles and artists. This course will allow students the opportunity to listen to many different styles of music and be able to discern differences in composers/artists as well as instrumentation. At the end of the 16 weeks, the high school students will be able to submit a research paper on their favorite style and/or artist. This course is suggested for grades 5-12.

Health/Science

Students will gain an appreciation for the intricate way that God designed them. They will also be encouraged to respect and protect their bodies by making God-honoring choices. We will investigate anatomy and physiology topics through hands on labs, simple dissections and interactive lessons designed for 6th through 8th graders. Information about the effects of drugs, alcohol, tobacco, poor nutrition, lack of exercise and stress will be woven into the discussions of each body system. Students will take basic notes, participate in activities and be assigned a weekly project that must be finished before the next class session.

FALL TERM: The topics covered will include: brain and nervous system, endocrine system, the sense organs, the skin, immune system, lymphatic system, nutrition, human growth and development.

SPRING TERM: The topics covered will include cells, skeletal system, muscular system, digestive system, renal system, cardiovascular system, respiratory system.

Math - Pre-Algebra

This class will show your students how to read, write, and understand the unique language of mathematics, so that they are prepared for every type of problem-solving and assessment situation. Students will work individually, in cooperative groups, and as a class to explore how to solve unique and complex problems.

Math - Algebra

From the first day your students begin to learn the vocabulary of algebra until the day they take final exams and standardized tests, these programs strengthen student understanding and provide the tools students need to succeed. Students will work individually, in cooperative groups, and as a class to explore how to solve unique and complex problems.

Science - Biology

The ultimate goal for this course is for the students to understand the overwhelming wonders of God’s Creations. Biology will be investigated through group labs, dissections and class interactions. God’s Creation will be intertwined throughout each study of the course. The animals to be dissected will include the earthworm, crayfish, frog and perch. There may be other dissections included, time permitting. One microscope with a digital camera, prepared slides and blank slides will be provided for group use. The students will be responsible for taking notes, completing assigned weekly projects and class participation. The students will be graded on lab work along with class work.

Topics Covered:

FALL TERM: What is Life?, Kingdom Monera, Kingdom Protista, Kingdom Fungi, Chemistry of Life, The Cell, Cellular Reproduction and DNA, and Mendelian Genetics.

SPRING TERM: Evolution- Part Scientific Theory, Part Unconfirmed Hypothesis, Ecology, The Invertebrates of Kingdom Animalia, Phylum Arthropoda, Phylum Chordata, Kingdom Plantae, Reptiles, Birds and Mammals.

Science - Advanced Biology

The wonders of Creation will be further explored in this Advanced Biology class. The anatomy of all of God’s Creations will be investigated through group labs, dissections, and class interactions. We will further explore from the tiny cell through all of the body systems. We will study these with the use of a microscope, prepared slides, student prepared slides and group dissections. The students will dissect a cow’s eye, heart and a fetal pig. There may be more dissections, time permitting, so that students can see the beauty of God’s creations.

FALL TERM: Cell Structure and Processes, Tissue, Skins and Bones, Skeletal System, Muscle Structure, Nervous System Structure, and The Central Nervous System.

SPRING TERM: The Peripheral Nervous System, The Endocrine System, The Circulatory System, The Lymphatic System, The Digestive System, The Respiratory System, The Urinary System, and The Reproductive System.

Science - Physical Science

Other physical science experiments may be added in, time permitting. The students will be responsible for taking simple notes, completing assigned weekly projects and class participation. FALL TERM: Atoms and Molecules, Conversion in the Metric System, Air and the Atmosphere, Composition of Water, Hydrosphere, Earth and the Lithosphere, and Weather.

SPRING TERM: Physics of Motion, Newton’s Laws, The Forces in Creation, Waves and Sound, Light, and an Introduction to Astrophysics.

Science - General Science

God’s wondrous creation will be discovered through Exploring Creation with General Science. General Science will be explored through hands-on labs, group discussion and simple note taking. The students will be responsible for taking simple notes, completing assigned weekly projects and class participation.

Fall Term: History of Science, Scientific Inquiry, Analyzing and Interpreting Experiments, Science and Technology, Archeology, Geology and Paleontology, Foundations of Geology, The Fossil Record, Uniformitarianism and Catastrophism

Spring Term: What is Life, Classifying Life, The Human Body, Energy and Life. The Human Digestive System, The Human Respiratory and Circulatory Systems, The Human Lymphatic, Endocrine and Urinary Systems, the Nervous System.

Study Skills Course Description

This course instructs students in basic study skills and how to develop a genuine enthusiasm for learning. The course includes segments on developing a learning philosophy, annotation, note taking strategies, free writing, stages for writing a formal essay, stages for writing a research paper, time management, integrating technology in a study plan, and how to avoid test anxiety. Each class will consist of a brief lecture, with question and answer time, an assigned task, review of the task, and homework assignment for the next lesson. Handouts will be provided.

Technology

Our Technology courses begin with basic instruction in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. Students will learn how to navigate the programs as well as how to best harness what each program has to offer.
